I made it back from Paris with only one new scent in my carry-on, a decidedly uninspired Tilleul by Parfums d’Orsay - I loved it when the attractive male French perfume associate was copiously spraying it on me at Printemps Hausmann - but now I’m all “Linden….so what!”

However I am coveting a few new juices…

Saint Honore des Pres - I love les Carrottes (dirty, sexy carrots!)

Le Labo - Bouquet Blanc (really well crafted jasmine - in your FACE)

Xerjoff - Oesel (redonklously expensive Italian juice. Warm conforting honeyed lemon orange blossom and cedar)

I had a fabulous dream two nights ago. For reasons I can’t explain in less than 1,000 words I have to thank The Real Housewives of NY and the season finale of Breaking Bad for this dream.

The dream goes…we’re moving, into this beautifully destroyed building at the top of a hill, you can tell it has history as it has intricate stone work upon brick and is partially boarded up. The house is fully furnished but every piece of furniture is nearly ruined, old tufted velvet camel back sofas, amazing wooden carved canopy beds. I notice the drop ceiling is covering stamped tin, I notice some wrought iron and glass frosted by dirt through more dropped ceiling in a particular bedroom. I ask the realtor what we do with all of the furniture, wanting to move my own things in, and he replies that I can’t move my things in. The furniture must all be kept within the house as it all once belonged to Talitha Getty, her will specified that all the home’s contents must be kept with the house. I get overwhelmed with joy at the prospect of what I might uncover and I call my Mother. My Mother joins me, begins to send out everything to be reupholstered and we take down the ceiling in the particular bedroom to reveal an unbelievably high glass and wrought iron ceiling that might belong in a Victorian greenhouse.

Yes, really I dream about things like this - crazy.

So wasn’t I curious about what Talitha Getty’s house really looked like?

Not even close! But I wouldn’t complain…

What can I say about this song, this movie? Beauty from ugliness, fate, sacrifice? It all seems pretty trite, yet on a late Spring evening when every tiny thing seems especially poignant perhaps it’s not so terrible to be less than rational.

I am deliberately generally not a fan of celebrity endorsed or new “Department store-y” perfumes, however! Dominique Ropion, the creator of Carnal Flower, has created the Rubenstein “Wanted” with Carlos Benaim (of V&R flowerbomb fame), this video piques my interest (though Magnolia hates my skin) - and renews my passion for the perfumes and passionate noses of the industry.

Perfumes are a fascinating and mostly overlooked or under-appreciated art, when you choose to wear a scent, especially a scent that is created by a master nose as Ropion, you are spraying on a Picasso…a Warhol…an artistic masterpiece. Whereas when you spray on Arden’s Sunflowers, no disrespect to David Apel (though his other grand piece is aptly entitled “Unforgiveable”), you are spraying on the equivalent of an over the bed landscape from some mid-western Hampton Inn.

Support your local boutique perfumers ;) !
